— The story behind the Rest Blanket
I often talk about rest and honoring your own pace.
I noticed that when I came home from the studio working with clay, I felt like I had pushed my body too much and was really tired. That was not the kind of energy I wanted to be in. I decided to take a step back to observe how I worked at the studio and paused. That's it, there was no pause. I did not sit, I did not stop, I did not pause, I was just working on a sculpture standing for hours. I did not notice that I was not listening to my body, I was just doing my thing. It was time to shift my narrative. I decided that I would imagine and design my own experience of rest at the studio. So, I designed a daybed. Great! Then, I needed a blanket to cover it and wrap myself into. Rest is a work in progress.
I wanted a story, a human story made by human hands. Through my research, I discovered Anna an Ukrainian weaver. She raises sheep, prepares the wool, makes her own natural dyes and then creates beautiful weavings. I loved the connection to nature and traditions in her approach. We chose a pattern, selected the colors and she weaved the blanket.
The touch of a 100% wool hand woven blanket is something that I had never experienced. It is very special. It is heavy. There is something raw. You picture the sheep, the weaving loom and the blanket being plunged into the cold water of the river to stabilize the colors. A story and an aura that you cannot get we an industrial product. People that come to the studio, always notice it. They sit on the daybed and touch the wool blanket. I am always amused to witness that.
